January Literary Section and Friends, some old some new
We still have copies of And Memoir. Bookmarks, Poets & Writers, Granta, African Voices, The Baffler, and Zoetrope Allstory are magazines you may have browsed or bought before. We have a new issue of Creative Nonfiction, and Boston Review has a new look.
So many of the new magazines come in and are a puzzle, is it fashion? Photography? Pop culture? Own is definitely men's fashion, Image is definitely photography (I am a sucker for those small format magazines), Vizor ended up in photography (although mostly pictures of women in clothes, it seemed more about the visuals than about clothes (but one could argue that about a significant amount of fashion photography)), Twin which seems a little more about the clothes is waiting hopefully for you with the other new arrivals at the front counter, and the Filament... is a little edgy and is in the catch all section of Pop Culture, somewhere near Gothic Beauty.

Mid June -- Some Magazines
A not so random sample of magazines that came in this week, mostly just a small sample of Friday's arrivals.
Why did I pick these? Mostly by what jumped out of me in the stacks.
Boho is something that we ordered quite some time ago, and finally came in.
Zoetrope Allstory? I like the format this time, last issue was prettier and glossier, but it was a bit standard, this issue has more personality, and besides, the guest designer is PJ Harvey.
Scoot? Yes it is rather pink! and normally I'm not a big pink fan, but it is so forthrightly pink, unlike the last several issues, and in the heavily macho row of motorcycle magazines it looks so cheerfully out of place that you have to smile.
Heavy Metal. Not music, graphic novel story teller. Earlier publisher of such luminaries as Moebius. We seem to have missed the last issue, but here it is again!
Vintage Truck. Some Fridays have been skateboard day. This Friday was Hot Rods and Others day. Steve and I agreed that Vintage Truck was definitely the most interesting looking, but that Rod and Kulture also showed a fine machine.
American Scholar: Is your hybrid good for the planet?
Bomb: hey, it has a lot of text and where are all the pictures? They must be doing something right, because we sold out of the last issue. It is nice to know that there is still a place for text.
Old House Interiors Design Center. Just because.
Velo News Tour de France Special. The on going Lance. And it isn't all about soccer.
Astronomy Special: Atlas of the Stars. I hear that there is some good dark sky down around Great Basin National Park where you can still get a good view of the stars.
Nido: To remind you that we do have magazines in languages other than English.
Utne Reader: the 3rd Sarah Palin cover this week, or maybe the 4th. Also the Economist and Newsweek (quite the striking cover). Also the 2010 Utne Independent Press Awards winnowed down from the 72 nominees.
And Hobby Farms. It has... Tomatoes on the cover. Lovely red ripe tomatoes on the cover. Clearly a total fantasy issue.
