JULY 4th!

Hey!  We will be CLOSED on July 4th, but we have plenty of reading material for your picnic or barbecue!

Or you can read politics and history!  TIME has its 10th Annual History Issue, asking Does It Still Matter? (The Constitution in constant crisis since 1787).  UTNE asks, Patriot Acts, What does it mean to love your country?

Paris Review is always a winner with people who come in to Bulldog, and this issue has several fun writers.

Once a wild young man of science fiction, now a venerable figure who is openly scatological, Samuel R Delany is interviewed on the Art of Fiction along with William Gibson.  Jonathan Lethem writes a short story, and there is poetry too.  I'm hoping that there will still be a copy left when I get back from the 4th!

March Literature and Culture updates

Boston Review's March issue, Arizona Failed State.  Will it be as good as the January article on Amazon's market share and publishers?

More optimistically titled is Small Changes Big Results for the World's Poor.

Paris Review, that classic literary journal, always in demand.  Cheerful spring colors, Ann Beattie and Janet Malcolm.

And a satisfyingly thick spring issue of Granta does ALIENS

Paris Review, Lorin Stein, and The Week

Hey catching up on The Week, I discovered that the Paris Review has a new editor. He was featured in one of my favorite sections, where a writer or editor presents six book recommendations.

I love testing my book knowledge by reading these lists -- have I heard of all the books recommended, are they books I expect the person to recommend or is the list unexpected and adds new shades or a startling turn to my preconceived notions, and best of all, are they books that I haven't heard of and am excited to learn about.
