McSweeney's Latest - Grantland

McSweeny's Family - 2012

McSweeney's is always up to something, and has had a very busy year.

First they added their new food quarterly - Lucky Peach, and now we have Grantland.

Bill Simmons gathers some of the most interesting and literate sportswriters to pique your interest.  This issue includes an interview with Don Delillo (the only writer who made me excited to read about football (End Zone)), you may be more familiar with his more recent giant baseball related novel, Underworld.  Chad Harbach writes about life as a Milwaukee Brewers fan, Katie Baker interests you in the rise of the female marathoner, and of course there are essays about the Penn State scandal, football head injuries, and Michael Schur has something to say about the on-going Red Sox ups and downs.

Plus you get the snazzy cover which opens up to a double-sided poster with George "The Ice Man" Gervin on the inner side.

New Titles 8/26/2011

Phil Steele's Pro Football arrived this week, a little delayed by the lock out, but still full of great information.

Furnish also arrived, in the Home section.

Miller-McCune should be here any day, it was on the list for this week, so I am hoping that it will come in the boxes on Monday!  We are just thrilled to have it back.

Road Trip Fun - Bust, Sunset, American Road

Bust -- Hurry in for this one, we won't have this issue on the shelf much longer, the new issue is due any day now!  This issue has a short section with a fun map of suggested Bust Road Trip destinations.  Places like Thelma and Louise's Dead Horse Point,   Minnesota's  On the Banks of Plum Creek (how many times did you read the book?),  the Harriet Tubman House,  Cleveland's History of Contraception Gallery, Burlesque Hall of Fame (guess where),  National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame...

Sunset does a western Foodie tour, and the American Road is always a great source for classic road trips.

You can order the most current issue of American Road on our sister site, mymagstore.com.  Be sure to check that the issue of the website is the issue you are looking for.  We currently only carry the current issue.

The Economist: The Future of News

This week, The Economist has a 14 page special on the Future of the News.

You might also want to read Kai Nagata's essay on why he left his rising career as a news reporter at the CBC.  I jumped to a wrong conclusion about why after reading a snippet of his piece, but then read his whole essay.

New Issue of Port - Summer 2011

Port bills itself as The Magazine for Men.  But I honestly don't see anything about it that makes it particularly for men.    A photographic essay on a remote village in South Africa, words and photos on the young assassins of Columbia, Nicholson Baker on David Remnick, sculpture, good design items (shelves, cups, tables), an interesting article about 85 year old green building visionary Harry Gesner, Joana and Joseph model clothes, something by Martin Amis, and interview with Sylvia Whitman, the (young) woman now in charge of the  Shakespeare & Company.

And then a few words from Hunter S Thompson.
"I'm a romantic junkie both to the love and adventure ethic -- cursed and burdened and stooped all my life from carrying the albatross of the "Romantic Sensibility" -- like Shelley and Keats and Lord Byron and Big Sam Coleridge and Keith Richards and Bob Dylan.  Let me plan a killer dinner party ... and let me invite all these guys"

You can order it online here.

July 9 -- Summer Fun

Now there is a new issue of WASHINGTON TRAILS in for summer fun outside.  If you check in our Regions & Travels section, you might find fun tips in AMERICAN ROAD, SUNSET (which has more fun local info than in days gone by), NORTHWEST TRAVEL, or places further afield -- Montana, Alaska, New York, Italy.

Meanwhile, you could check out a few new arrivals.

Brick is all about Lego, it is the Summer Music! issue from The Believer, a Writers Digest special on writing for Kids, Hi Fructose in the Pop Culture section but mostly about edgy art,  Foam is becoming more about fashion for Surf Girls but their models are girls who can swim and surf.  Or check out  Cooler, with a little more surfing.

JULY 4th!

Hey!  We will be CLOSED on July 4th, but we have plenty of reading material for your picnic or barbecue!

Or you can read politics and history!  TIME has its 10th Annual History Issue, asking Does It Still Matter? (The Constitution in constant crisis since 1787).  UTNE asks, Patriot Acts, What does it mean to love your country?

Paris Review is always a winner with people who come in to Bulldog, and this issue has several fun writers.

Once a wild young man of science fiction, now a venerable figure who is openly scatological, Samuel R Delany is interviewed on the Art of Fiction along with William Gibson.  Jonathan Lethem writes a short story, and there is poetry too.  I'm hoping that there will still be a copy left when I get back from the 4th!

(July 4th 2013)

Twice a Year Hobo

Twice a year, our neighbors up north in Vancouver put out the awesome HOBO

It wanders between our photography and our pop culture sections.

It does have text and poetry, a number of interviews, photos of Michelle Williams, what Hobo calls a "portfolio" of photographic self-portraits, several photo/fashion essays, Justine Kurland's personal history photos of her road trips as a photographer and mother.

It is a brown issue, Dogimont's color fashion are outdoors brown, Tyler Udall's are simply brown and white.  Hobo has the classical art view of the human body, so the magazine is not afraid of full nudity.

You can come into the store or just jump on in and order a copy from mymagstore.com.

Vogue Italia - Tara Lynn

Inside is a feature with real people as models.

On the cover --

You may  remember the French Elle with Tara Lynn on the cover.  Now, a romantically done black and white lingerie feature shot by Steven Meisel with Tara Lynn, Candice Huffine and Robyn Lawley.   A thumbs up from one male, who found the models very refreshing.

You can come buy a copy in the store, or order here.

Lucky Peach is here!

A new quarterly concern from McSweeneys,  ongoing collaboration for the travel foodie among us.  Created by NY Momofuku's David Chang and Peter Meehen.  Each issue will focus on a theme, issue 2 will be "The Sweet Spot", but this first issue is RAMEN.

Highlights are Anthony Bourdain discussing David Chang's career in terms of such classic food movies as Ramen Girl and Tampopo.  I haven't seen Ramen Girl, but Tampopo,by the late Juzo Itami, is a must see. (A few hints, "noodle western", truck driver ramen master, a virtuous but hapless ramen stand owner, a yakuza and his food mistress.)

And of course, Lucky Peach has recipes galore.

You can find Lucky Peach in Bulldog News or on mymagstore's website.

Wolves, the Grand Canyon, and Chuckanut Drive

We still have copies of the recent issue of High Country News, the delisting of the Gray Wolf.  KUOW covered it just this week.

Idaho is very worried about wolves, reports Betsy Marston.

Or you can check out the newest issue.  Along with the main article on Las Vegas flight tours over the Grand Canyon there is a low key article on the important topic of news reporting.  With all the world of blogging and the folding and diminishing of the metropolitan newspapers,  fewer reporters are in DC keeping an eye on western issues.

The bulk of federal land is in the west, and in some states, more than half the state is federal land.  Here in King county we are so urban that we don't pay much attention to the public lands, but just step a little outside of the urban corridor, and you quickly run into the contentious politics of private vs public land.  Just go a little north, and check out the state trust lands on the way to Bellingham.

Graduation? Summer? A little time to read something substantial?

Summer comes around, and many places come out with lists of "Summer Reading",  easy stuff to read at the beach.  Or you can be like me and some friends of mine, summer is when you have time to sink your teeth into something more demanding.  I rather like Latin or Greek authors for the summer or geology  (don't tell!  but sometimes I have a little trouble keeping up with magazines that zip by ephemerally and not on a geologic time scale.)

So here are a few recent arrivals in the literary / ideas section.  Granta does the "F" word*, Prairie Schooner, A Public Space, Chicago Review, Raritan (Conservatism and Counterrevolution, I F Stone an Enemy of the State), and then the standby, McSweeney's Believer.  Paris Review should be in very soon.

* the "F" word, F is for feminism.

More Music: Uncut

There I was, cropping in my picture of the new (July) Uncut.  It looked like a fun issue, Neil Young, Arctic Monkeys, Arcade Fire and this month's cd, a Mod Soundtrack.  You know, 60's Mod.  Featuring James Brown, Ray Charles, Ike & Tina Turner, Smokey Robinson, Sam Cooke.

And as I checked how the magazine looked in front of the stack of the day's newspapers, I looked at the lower left hand corner.  Poly Styrene R.I.P.  !?!

Is it Johnny Depp or Penelope Cruz

With all the hoopla about the new Pirates movie, the battle of covers continues.  You can find Penelope Cruz on Premiere (French) or GQ UK, or the Johnny Depp fan can find him in Playgirl UK, American Cinematographer, or GQ Russian.

Or you can amble on into the Bulldog and forage on the shelves for yourself!

What's Inside: The Source interviews Idris Elba

Maybe if I'd gone to see the movie I would have known!  But I think that there is still a chance to see...

Idris Elba, who brought to life Stringer Bell in The Wire, now plays Heimdall in the new Thor movie.  The Source has an interview with him.

You can order the most current issue of The Source at mymagstore.com.  If this inteview is a must, be sure to specify that you want the May 2011 issue!

Rolling Stone: Lady Gaga, Bob Dylan, or Matt Taibbi on Goldman Sachs

The new issue has Lady Gaga, the previous issue had the 70 Greatest Dylan songs, and some people think that Matt Taibbi was soft on Goldman Sachs.  Or maybe you just want to check out what Mojo has to say about Marley!

(if you want a specific issue, please specify, otherwise the most current issue will be sent)

National Trails Day

It is National Trails Day -- There is still time to get out somewhere!

Nature and Science (magazines)

Reading my news feeds,  I came across a reference to NATURE magazine, an article about evaluating extinction rates and how science reporting goes haywire.  You can find the original Nature letter in the May 19th issue

You can also order Nature on the mymagstore.com website.  We carry a very limited number of back issues, so it you want the May 19th issue, be sure to specify it.

A quick note -- while we do carry Nature, we are unable at this time to carry Science magazine.  Science is a subscriber only publication.  I would love to carry Science, and am still hoping you find a way.
